My stepfather suffered a massive stroke on Friday the 13th – I have come to help my mother with his financial obligations. I am so confused! After going through his financial records we discovered obligations we knew about and many we didn’t. He has a mortgage, a home equity loan, 4 credit cards, cell phone, plus all the regular utilities. He will survive but it his paralysis is so severe that he may never speak or walk again. My mother has always kept her finances seperate from my stepfather’s. They file married but seperate. My mother can not afford to pay both his debts and hers. Is she reponcible for all of his financial obligations? If anyone can help me I would be so grateful.

I am told that I should immediately stop paying my credit card bills to get the attention of the lenders, so they will be more open to negotiations. And I should refer all contact to the debt settlement company. Is this normal?
I’m not behind on any bills right now, but it’s looking likely that I will be in a short time.

My relatives cannot handle their finances! Last year they made $103,000 & haven’t a dime to show for it! They want to find a place that will handle their finances, pay the bills & give them only a certain amount of $ to live on until the next payday. Thanks for your help & time!

When you live common-law or marrited how you handle the financial part? I woul like to avoid money issue, but in meantime would like that 50/50 plan. How you handle the fact that one person earns less than the other, the who is pying what. Can you guys help me with my dilema.
