How professional is it to use “smileys” and “lol’s” in a business e-mail ? lol :-)?
Question: How professional is it to use “smileys” and “lol’s” in a business e-mail ? lol
?
I’m putting this in the “personal finance” category because the email in question is with someone I know personally.
It’s a fellow coworker I might do business with

don’t do it, it is not very professional at all.
It doesn’t seem very professional. If you know this person outside of work & have been to their place, gone out with them, etc then I don’t think it would be a problem. But if it’s just a fellow co-worker you are acquainted with just because of the job, then no, it’s not appropriate.
if you know them personally it is okay to put
but not in every email you send to them, and only do it once and that’s only if you have too… honestly its better to try to avoid using it because it is business email.
and don’t put “lol”
Smileys are ok. They help when a comment seems like it may be taken the wrong way. lol is pushing it though.
If the email is actually an official business communication, the : O, : -), ; ), and LOLs do not belong. If you are talking business, they would never come up.
If you know the person, and it’s not business related, then sure.
not so smart for a professional.
A simple smiley face is perfectly acceptable in most corporate cultures in America, but “lols” are only appropriate if the person is your good friend. Saying lol is not very professional.
If this is somebody that you know and do business with on a regular basis, then a smiley may be acceptable especially if you are corresponding via email. If this is a formal business communication and you want to be taken seriously, don’t do it.
