This is a long process. If you’ve never done one – grab a book from the library which has examples [in the marketing section] this will help A HEAP [try "Sutcliffe's marketing audit - Sutcliffe put together a good outline. Every one is different so dont be afraid to tailor yours to suit. Then you need to put together a list of relevant questions you need to ask your business....Questions on how effectively the marketing department gets info thru the company, how the company innovates, advertising effectiveness, promotions, customer relation building, customer retention etc etc[to me, Marketing is "Adding value" to the organisation and customer....so its MUCH more than simply advertising as most people think!] Thats a question I also ask in the review “Whats your definition of Marketing”…..its amazing the answers you get…a lot of people dont understand what its about…even the academic boffins…its hard to find one definititve answer. Anyhow….the Q&A formulation is probably the hardest part, and I’d suggest getting one of your marketing theory books to look at . Simply go through what you’d like to be asked about if you had a business….once you get started, its not too hard. You’ll also need some form of questionnairre in the questions [ie: likert scale 1-5] to rate how the business goes about various markeintg tasks. The Q&A will prob take a few hours to complete…and a few more hours will be needed when you actually ask the questions too. Then you have to go away and analise the information provided. Provide clear, achievable recommendations. The report will normally be HUGE [over 30 or so pages] so I’d recommednd doing a clear, clean summary page of your recommendations at the end – this saves the custommer flicking through the whole report to find them. The summary page should also include a deadline and person responsible for achieving your reccomendations. Finally, dont call it a “Marketing Audit”…..try “Marketing Rrview”..the word Audit conjurs up negative feelings [ie: tax audit] and you risk putting the company off side immediately!!
When I did my review assignment, it seemed impossible to start with, but once you get going……finally, if still unsure, ask your lecturer…they’ll be happy to help! I ususaly got pretty average marks while doing my masters, but for my marketing review assignment, I got a high distinction…as it was based more on logic than academic dribble.
Ask for invoices?
